I don't believe our purpose suddenly appears one day. I think it's been calling us our entire lives. For some people, it's a career they can't stop thinking about. For others, it's a place they're drawn to, a creative gift they've ignored, or a way of helping others that keeps showing up no matter how many times they try to dismiss it. For some, it’s a major life event that changes everything. Joseph Campbell called this The Call to Adventure. It's the moment life invites us beyond what's familiar...into the person we were always meant to become.
Let’s explore how the birth chart has been describing that call all along and where it lives. Unlike the Hero's Journey, which tells one complete story, our birth chart gives us the map for an entire lifetime. There isn't just one place to look, because our calling isn't one-dimensional. Some placements will be stronger than others, and it reveals itself from several different perspectives.

One of the most important concepts in Hellenistic astrology is the idea of planetary rulers. Every Rising Sign has a ruling planet.
Think of that planet as the main guide for your life's journey. If your Rising Sign is Aries, Mars becomes your guide. If you're a Leo Rising like me, the Sun becomes the guide. Cancer looks to the Moon. Sagittarius to Jupiter. Before we can understand the map, we first need to know who's holding the compass
Let me show you what I mean. I'm a Leo Rising. That means the Sun becomes the ruler of my chart. When I began studying astrology, I didn't know any of this. I simply knew I kept feeling called toward certain experiences.
Travel.
Study abroad.
Pilgrimages.
Art school.
Mystery School.
Meditation retreats.
Teaching.
Astrology.
At the time, they felt like completely separate chapters. But looking back through the lens of my birth chart...they were all expressions of the same call. My chart ruler—the Sun—is in Aries in the 9th House. My Midheaven is there too. Even Mars, the ruler of Aries, is there. The 9th House speaks to philosophy, higher learning, pilgrimage, teaching, and the search for meaning. Looking back...I wasn't wandering. I was following a call before I even had language for it. The birth chart didn't create my purpose. It helped me recognize the thread that had been there all along. And that's what I hope happens for you as you begin looking at your own chart.

Fittingly, the role that transformed his career was an adventure through space alongside a found family. The birth chart revealed his potential.
